THAMPADDAI MAHA VIDYALAYA

Established in 1923 • Excellence Through Knowledge

OUR HISTORY

Thampaddai Maha Vidyalaya was established on May 1, 1923, by the government under the name "Government Tamil Mixed School" with 23 students. It was the first school created in the Thampaddai village in the Thirukkovil area of Ampara district in the Eastern Province. Initially, education took place in a temporary hut with no basic facilities, offering only classes from grades 1 to 5.

Between 1948 and 1950, proper building facilities were constructed. In 2000, classes expanded to include grades up to 11. In 2004, the school was destroyed by the tsunami and relocated temporarily to private land with makeshift shelters. In 2008, the school was rebuilt on new land with government support and officially reopened.

In 2009, the school was upgraded to include advanced-level classes and renamed from "Government Tamil Mixed School" to "Thampaddai Maha Vidyalaya," as it remains known today. The school celebrated its centennial anniversary last year (2023).
